Participation in this program is currently limited to USAA members with an active auto insurance policy in select states.
The USAA SafePilot App instructs, inspires and rewards safe driving habits to help keep you safe on the road while lowering your auto insurance premium.
Eligible members can receive a discount of up to 10% for enrolling and participating in the program, and earn a premium discount at renewal time for being safe drivers.
When activated, the app monitors driving habits including phone handling, hands-free phone use, harsh braking, and how much you drive. The better you drive, the greater the discount on your next premium. All members of a household included on a USAA auto insurance policy can participate, with the earned discount based on an average of each driver’s individual score.

My biggest issue is that you can give the app free range to do whatever it needs with your phone (location 24/7, run in the background, never be put to sleep, etc.), but if your phone battery optimization/ power saving isn't turned off, you can't use the app. My phone battery and overall phone usage must be sacrificed at the alter of safe pilot for 5-20 min of driving a few times a week. Just because you say your app does not use a lot of battery doesn't mean all apps are like that.

Unreliable at best. At worst an active way to manipulate rates. I've been using it for 3 years and have yet to see my policy decrease regardless of score as the policy renewal (with no accidents, tickets, or claims) always goes up despite being in the same vehicle. Whenever you bring anything up they simply say you're scored on things other than what's listed but will not elaborate or share that data.

Update 11/2024: battery issue much improved, and entire trip now shows in history. Update (7/2024) seems to be causing HUGE battery drain (on Pixel 4A running Android 14 via Lineage OS21), previous version was ok. Also, need to go back to show entire trip map in trip history, with the red dot where any infraction occurred. I have to disable app when not in use or battery dies. I have gotten harsh braking strikes when none occurred. I did get over $100 discount on 6 month renewal.
