About this game

Istanbul is, without a doubt, one of the best board games to have ever been published. The long list of its awards and honors speaks for itself:

šŸ† 2015 Nederlandse Spellenprijs Best Expert Game Nominee
šŸ† 2014 Swiss Gamers Award Winner
šŸ† 2014 Meeples' Choice Nominee
šŸ† 2014 Kennerspiel des Jahres Winner
šŸ† 2014 International Gamers Award - General Strategy: Multi-player Nominee
šŸ† 2014 Hra roku Nominee
šŸ† 2014 Gouden Ludo Winner
šŸ† 2014 Golden Geek Board Game of the Year Nominee
šŸ† 2014 Golden Geek Best Strategy Board Game Nominee
šŸ† 2014 Golden Geek Best Family Board Game Nominee

In our 2018 digital version we have maintained all of the features that made Istanbul the fan favorite that it is, but also expanded upon it with a number of tools and features only available on the digital platform. We maintained the authentic board game feeling with the convenience you can expect from an electronic device.

So what is the game about?

Can you be the first merchant to collect a certain number of rubies?
āœ”ļø Run, collect and trade goods across the bazaar
āœ”ļø Take control over your assistants
āœ”ļø Increase your wheelbarrow capacity
āœ”ļø Acquire special abilities to increase the advantage over your competitors
āœ”ļø Buy rubies or trade goods for them

In Istanbul, you lead a group of one merchant and his four assistants through 16 locations in the bazaar. In each such a location, you can carry out a specific action. The challenge, however, is that to take an action, you must move your merchant and an assistant there, then leave the assistant behind to handle all the details while you focus on larger matters. If you want to use that assistant again later, your merchant must return to that location to pick him up. Thus, you must plan ahead carefully to avoid being left with no assistants and thus unable to do anythingā€¦

Very good digital implementation of a great board game. I like the interface decisions they made, to make the different options visually "work" on a phone. (Just pasting on the board game art/interface doesn't typically work well.) I do wish they had notifications enabled to let you know when it's your turn on an asynchronous game.

It's 2024 and I'm still loving this game. Great implementation of an already great board game that just flows smoothly. Everything is intuitive after a handful of plays. I would love to see some expansions in 2024, at least the two main ones (Coffee, Letters) from the physical "Big Box" edition. Any expansion would be an immediate purchase for me, and I'll bet a lot of others, given the number of 5-star reviews I see here!

I own the cardboard version of the game and I loved it so I was excited to pick up the digital version. The app very well done with one major flaw. Asynchronous play doesn't notify you when it's your turn. Most of my digital table top gaming is done asynchronously with friends and the fact that there isn't a notification means the games frequently get forgotten. If you don't care about asynchronous play though, I would highly recommend. The app is polished and the game itself is fantastic.
