About this app

With the free and advertising-free app MunichArtToGo, the Central Institute for Art History (ZI) in Munich makes the diverse resources on art and cultural history of the research institute literally “accessible” on site. MunichArtToGo offers the opportunity to re-explore the urban space of the city of Munich with the help of unique sources and stocks from the image archive and the library of the ZI. The content of MunichArtToGo is based on the “art city of Munich” from 1800 to the present day.

You can use an interactive map to determine your own location in the city and go to the nearest place that has an interesting and exciting story to tell. The stories show historical recordings that can be compared with the current situation on site, and make connections and breaks between the past and the present clear. The offer is supplemented by short audio or video clips.

The glass palace, Ludwig II's winter garden, the Elvira photo studio, the major art dealers of the early 20th century, the buildings of the National Socialists on Königsplatz or the Central Collecting Point - presence and absence of cultural heritage - historical places, processes and constellations - are immediately before location can be experienced.

The stories and thematic tours were developed by ZI employees, specialist colleagues and students from the Institute for Art History at the Ludwig Maximilian University. In addition, MunichArtToGo enables users to expand and supplement the information and create their own stories.

MunichArtToGo is ZI's contribution to the kultur.digital.vermittlung program, funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art.
